Based on Aki Kaurismäki’s beloved classic film, Kauas pilvet karkaavat is a touching, warm and timely dramedy about resilience, love and a fresh start. The play follows headwaiter Ilona and tram driver Lauri, whose lives go off the rails when both lose their jobs on the brink of a recession.
Unemployment and everyday challenges test the couple’s pride and relationship, but they refuse to give up. Kaurismäki’s laconic humor, a strong sense of community, and visual elegance create a world on stage where hope peeks out from behind even the darkest cloud. A heartfelt portrait of the dignity of ordinary people and how, in the midst of crisis, something entirely new and beautiful can emerge.
