Public lecture: Heimosodat 1918–1921

Docent and university researcher Heikki Roiko-Jokela will lecture on the Heimosodat of 1918–1921 at Äänekosken lukio on Thursday 29 Oct 2026 at 17:30.

From 1918 to 1922, Finnish volunteer units carried out several armed expeditions known as the Heimosodat to East Karelia, Ingria, Petsamo, and Estonia. The aim was to detach the territories inhabited by Finno-Ugric kindred peoples from Russia, which had fallen into civil war. The kindred peoples would either become independent or voluntarily join, on the basis of national self-determination, to form a Greater Finland. The expeditions had a national-romantic background, but also strategic objectives: to achieve secure borders and a strong Finnish state against threats from the east.
